Overcoming frustration when plans fail….

As a coach, I often encounter students who feel frustrated when they struggle to stick to their plans. This frustration can stem from a sense of failure or the pressure of unmet expectations. 


However, it is important to remember that setbacks are a natural part of the journey toward success. Here are some strategies, including the "Eat the Frog" method to help you stay on track and avoid that feeling of frustration.


  1. Eat the Frog

The "Eat the Frog" concept, suggests tackling your most daunting task first.


This approach helps in two significant ways:

- It provides a sense of accomplishment that can energise you for the rest of the day.

- It reduces anxiety associated with procrastination, allowing you to focus on other tasks without the weight of that initial challenge looming over you.


  1. Be realistic

Frustration often arises from setting overly ambitious goals. Break your larger objectives into smaller, achievable tasks. This not only makes your plan more manageable but also allows for a sense of progress as you complete each step.


  1. Be flexible

Life is unpredictable, and sometimes plans need to change. Build flexibility into your schedule to accommodate unexpected events. This adaptability can reduce feelings of frustration when things don’t go as planned. I always suggest putting a buffer in. For example if taking detailed notes is going to take around an hour then factor in two hours. 


  1. Reflect

When you find yourself off track, take a moment to reflect. What led to the deviation?


Use this insight to adjust your approach. Embrace the idea that setbacks are opportunities for learning and growth.



  1. Practice Self Compassion

It is easy to be hard on ourselves when we do not meet our expectations. Practice self-compassion by acknowledging that everyone experiences frustration and that it is a normal part of personaldevelopment. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend in a similar situation.


  1. Stay accountable

I am fully vested in all of my clients and it is important we work together on weekly progress. Just knowing that someone else is invested in your progress can motivate you to stick to your plan.



Frustration can be a powerful teacher, guiding you toward better strategies. 


Remember, progress is a journey, and every step counts, no matter how small. Keep moving forward!
