Harnessing the Power of Spaced Repetition

In the quest for effective study methods, students often explore various techniques, from highlighting textbooks to re-reading notes. However, there is a hidden gem among these strategies that has been gaining recognition - spaced repetition. (Remember a study method that works for one student may not work for you so please do remember this when exploring methods). I work with many students often giving them a 3/4 step method structure for every piece of their course material which we can change over time.


What is Spaced Repetition?

Spaced repetition is a learning technique that involves reviewing information at increasing intervals over time. Unlike traditional cramming, where you attempt to memorise everything in one sitting, spaced repetition optimises memory retention by spacing out study sessions strategically.


How Does Spaced Repetition Work?

At its core, spaced repetition leverages the psychological method of the spacing effect, which suggests that information is better retained when reviewed repeatedly over spaced intervals. Here's how it works:


  1. Initial Learning: When you encounter new information, you commit it to memory through initial exposure, whether it's reading a textbook, watching a lecture, or taking notes.

  2. Review and Recall: Rather than cramming the information all at once, spaced repetition prompts you to review the material at gradually increasing intervals. This reinforces your memory and strengthens your recall ability over time.

  3. Optimised Recall: By spacing out your study sessions strategically, spaced repetition ensures that you revisit the material at the optimal moment when you're on the verge of forgetting it. This reinforces long-term retention and minimises the risk of information decay.

  • Adaptive Learning: Spaced repetition adapts to your individual learning pace and retention capacity, optimising the review schedule based on your performance and mastery of the material.

How to Implement Spaced Repetition:


  1. Choose a Spaced Repetition Tool: Numerous apps and software platforms are available that incorporate spaced repetition algorithms, such as Anki, Quizlet, and Memrise. Select a tool that suits your preferences and learning style. I like to coach clients on a bespoke level and so once I get to know my students - I can adapt learning tools to suit them.

  2. Create Flashcards or Study Sets: Input the material you want to learn into the spaced repetition tool, whether it's vocabulary words, definitions, equations, or key concepts. Break down the information into bite-sized chunks for optimal retention. My new student toolkit also provides structure from the outset of your course material.

  3. Review Regularly: Commit to regular study sessions where you review the flashcards or study sets generated by the spaced repetition tool. Focus on actively recalling the information rather than passively reading it.

  4. Adjust Intervals as Needed: Monitor your progress and adjust the review intervals based on your level of mastery and retention. Spend more time on challenging material and less on familiar content.
