You're preparing for an exam. Or a client call. Or walking into the office knowing there's a difficult conversation ahead...and suddenly your mind goes blank. Your chest tightens. You question everything you know. Imposter syndrome is loud! (you start doubting your career completely).
That's not a competence problem. It's often your nervous system shouting and I see this time and time again.
The legal profession is pretty much designed to keep your nervous system activated. High stakes. Perfectionism. Billable hours. The pressure to know everything. The fear of missing something that costs your client.
Your body is constantly in alert mode and when you're stuck there, confidence becomes impossible no matter how smart you are.
But here's the real law: confidence isn't about knowing more. It's about regulating your nervous system so you can access the deeper knowing that's already inside you...this is the part that is very often missed when we are students and training.
Everyone's Blueprint Is Different
Remember when you were a student? Some of you thrived under pressure. Some of you froze. Some of you needed silence to think. Some of you needed to talk it through.
That was your blueprint and trying to force yourself into someone else's blueprint is exhausting.
Your nervous system has its own language. Maybe you need to move your body before you can think clearly. Maybe you need five minutes of silence. Maybe you need to talk through your thoughts out loud. Maybe you need to know the plan before you walk into a room.
The lawyers who are thriving right now -the ones actually enjoying their careers—aren't the ones pretending to be unshakeable. They're the ones who know their own blueprint and work with it, not against it.
When your nervous system is activated, your brain literally can't access your competence. You go blank. You second-guess yourself. You apologise for ideas that are actually good.
This is neuroscience, not weakness.
The shift happens when you learn to regulate. Not to ignore the activation. Not to push through it...but to regulate it.
What actually calms your nervous system? Breathing? Movement? Talking it through? Grounding techniques? Different things work for different people...and that's okay.
Once you regulate, something magical happens: you can access your deeper knowing. That quiet, steady part of you that actually trusts itself. The part that knows you've prepared. That knows you're capable. That knows your perspective matters.
That's where real confidence lives. Not in the performance. Not in the perfect answer. But in that regulated, grounded knowing of who you are and what you're capable of.
You stop forcing yourself to be someone else's version of a lawyer.
You become more resilient because you're not fighting yourself anymore, you're working with yourself.
You actually enjoy the work again because you're not performing. You're just being grounded, capable, and aligned with how you actually operate best.
But what about time recording and all those billable hours?
I know. You're staring at the clock. Six minutes unaccounted for. The pressure to bill every moment. The guilt when you're not "productive."
Here's the truth: regulation is productive. A two-minute walk. Three conscious breaths. Thirty seconds of grounding. These aren't luxuries, they're the difference between making sharp decisions and making mistakes that cost you hours later. Making sure that in your personal time you are taking time out - real time out.
When you're regulated, you work faster. You think clearer. You catch errors before they become problems. The time you invest in your nervous system pays for itself.
